Misdemeanor vs. Felony Theft Crimes
In the state of Maryland, potential penalties are punished according to the amount of the property that was taken. Therefore, anything equaling $1,000 or more can be charged as a felony offense.
Penalties for a felony theft conviction include:
- Up to 10 years in prison and a fine of $10,000 for property values up to $10,000
- Up to 15 years in prison and a $15,000 fine for property between $10,000 and $100,000
- Up to 25 years and a $25,000 fine for property valued at more than $100,000
Misdemeanors, on the other hand, carry shorter prison sentences and smaller fines, but your freedom and your hard-earned money are still on the line. If you are found guilty without prior convictions on your record, you can face up to 18 months in prison. If, however, you have a prior record, you can face up to 5 years in prison, even for property valued at less than $1,000.
